Netflix subscription price increasing

The price for a subscription is increasing for customers in the US and Canada, effective immediately. The last price increase came less than a year and a half ago. Netflix currently boasts 214 million global subscribers, of which approximately 74 million reside in the US and Canada.

  1. The Standard plan is increasing by $1.50 in both markets. Customers in the US can expect to pay $15.50 USD, while customers in Canada can expect to pay $16.50 CAD.
  2. The Premium plan is increasing by $2.00, from $18.00 to $20.00 USD.
  3. The Basic plan is increasing by $1.00, from $9.00 to $10.00 USD.

Netflix has been reticent when it comes to statistics regarding viewership, subscription numbers, and popularity of shows. But as of late, Netflix has a new website where you can check the stats of your favourite shows.

Then there was the global phenomenon: Squid Game. Squid Game shattered previous watch records, clocking in at a staggering 2.1 billion hours watched in a single month. The next biggest show was Bridgerton, clocking in at 625 million hours watched in a month.

As pressure from competitors increases, Netflix is looking to generate more revenue and expand into new territory, like the gaming business, where several games are now available on iOS and Android devices. Netflix executives have stated several times, that they are more than just a video streaming service. Netflix’s long-term strategy is to keep you on their app for as long as possible, and that means eventually competing with social media apps as well.
